Polyester and Nylon Mesh for Pool Filters & Skimmers

What Are Pool Filters and Pool Skimmers?

Pool filters and skimmers are essential to keeping commercial and private pools clean and safe for swimmers. They are designed to capture and collect debris and other solid contaminants floating in the pool water, whether through manual or automated processes.

Mesh fabric is one of the main components of pool filters and skimmers. Due to its unique open-hole structure, it provides a screening effect within the devices. Water can flow freely through the holes while larger particulates are blocked.

Polyester vs. Nylon Mesh — Choosing the Best Pool Skimmer/Filter Material

Given the important function of pool skimmers and filters, it is vital to ensure they work properly. Choosing the right material is key to achieving this goal as the mesh filter material or mesh skimmer material can affect how well the filter or skimmer removes solid contaminants from the water.

The two most commonly used materials in pool filters and skimmers are polyester mesh and nylon mesh. Each offers unique characteristics that make it suitable for particular pool applications. Understanding the differences between the two can help you determine which one is right for your filtration/skimming needs.

Polyester Mesh

Polyester mesh is a highly versatile material. It is used in various applications across a wide range of industries due to its many advantageous properties. For example, it can repel water and resist damage and degradation stemming from chemicals, mold and mildew, and UV radiation. All of these qualities are essential for materials used in or near swimming pools.

Nylon Mesh

Nylon mesh can be manufactured with a variety of fiber thicknesses and a range of opening sizes, which allows it to be used for many different screening purposes. Other key advantages include high strength and durability (which results in long service life) and smooth surface (which allows for easy separation of filtered solids). These qualities make it an appropriate option for pool skimmers and filters. However, it must be noted that nylon will degrade faster than polyester in direct sunlight and should be chosen only for applications in which the fabric is not exposed to the elements.

At Jason Mills, we have over 40 years of experience working with textiles. This extensive experience enables us to select and source high-quality fabrics for a wide range of applications. For pool filters and skimmers, we offer the following polyester and nylon mesh materials:

  • Style 65 Polyester Mesh: This material is made from 100% polyester fibers. It comes in 50-inch widths, soft and medium-firm finishes, and black, white, or sky-blue colors. This is the standard mesh used for pool skimmers.
  • Style 3333 Polyester/Nylon Mesh: This material is made from a mixture of polyester and nylon fibers. It has a natural color and soft finish. It is available in 52-inch widths. The fine knit of this material allows for silt filtration, but will not bag with accumulated water.
  • Style 3100 Polyester Mesh: Made from 100% lightweight polyester, this material offers all the same qualities as our 3333, but at a significant cost savings.
  • Style 8618 Polyester Mesh: This material is made from 100% polyester fibers. It comes in white or black with a medium finish. It is available in 50-inch widths.
