Fire-resistant fabrics play an important role in minimizing safety hazards and ensuring compliance with industry and safety regulations. Aircraft specialty fabrics are designed and tested to resist fire and flame in the event of an emergency. At Jason Mills, we design our fabrics to meet and exceed fire resistance standards and provide additional resistive benefits. Learn more about the benefits of switching to a fire-resistant fabric you can trust.

The Importance of Fire Resistant Fabrics in Aircraft

FAR 25.853 is a standard that sets the flammability requirements of fabrics used for aircraft seat cushions and similar objects within an aircraft. To comply with this standard, the fabric must be able to suitably withstand fire exposure from a 12-second or 60-second vertical fire test. The Federal Aviation Regulations (FAR) apply to interior components of aircraft above a certain passenger capacity, as fire-resistant fabrics can slow or even halt the spread of fire to preserve human life during an emergency.
Along with meeting this critical standard, the manufacturers at Jason Mills design and produce our aircraft fabrics to withstand UV radiation. The textiles have a solution dye deep in the fibers that protect them from up to 2,000 hours of sunlight exposure. This is critical in aircraft that are in direct sunlight throughout their operation, as this protective dye solution mitigates degradation and breakdown.

Advantages of Using Polyester & Nylon Mesh Fabrics

Polyester is highly advantageous for use in interior aircraft components like seat cushions and headrests, especially in high-traffic commercial aircraft. These fabrics are breathable, durable, and easy to maintain. We also offer knitted mesh fabrics in a wide variety of sizes, colors, and styles. Nylon, a synthetic material of plastic-based extruded fibers, is advantageous because of its lightweight, resistance to temperature and chemical damage, and easy cleanability.
Polyester fabrics have fibers produced through a chemical reaction, which are then stretched and arranged into a yarn. Polyester fabrics are durable, offer excellent dimensional stability, and can be treated with resins to enhance the fabric with additional positive characteristics.

Aircraft Interior Fabric Solutions From Jason Mills

We offer specialty aircraft interior fabric solutions with different properties based on the application or project in mind. Fire resistance is an essential characteristic of interior fabrics ranging from seat cushions and supports to nets and literature pockets at the back of every seat. Two popular varieties of our aircraft upholstery fabrics are:

  • Style 8600 Polyester Mesh: This polyester mesh has an open, dimensionally stable weave with a medium finish. This is a mid-weight material, and it is available in black and natural color options.
  • Style 1992 Polyester Mesh: Style 1992 polyester mesh features a tighter mesh knit pattern available in black and natural color options. Because of the tighter knit, it is a heavyweight material. The fabric has a medium finish, and we provide this mesh in two widths for different projects: 60 inches and 120 inches.

Both of these styles utilize a black solution-dyed yarn, which makes them highly resistant to fading and degradation. (Tested to 2,000 hours).
